Just Another Icehole

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - Fire officials in New Bedford, Mass., say a man using a blowtorch to melt ice on his back porch ended up setting his house on fire, causing up to $30,000 in damage.

Fire Capt. Scott Kruger tells The Standard-Times of New Bedford that no one was injured during Monday's incident at the three-story home.

I bet he shaves with a hedge trimmer. Using a blowtorch to melt ice on your house is overkill. Getting anywhere near your house with a blowtorch is poor planning, unless you're a budding arsonist. Certainly there are less conspicuous ways to burn your home down and collect insurance.

Wonder if he considered just putting salt on his porch? Nah, that's too obvious and besides, those damn bags are heavy. I'm sure this seemed like a very easy way to get rid of the ice. After all, fire melts ice, and hey, as long as you're careful, what could happen?

I would hate to go hunting with this guy. "What? You mean we're supposed to leave enough of the deer to eat? Dammit! Guess I shouldn't've brought the howitzer." I understand the fella's been very depressed lately because his application to undergo training as a mohel was rejected. I could've told him he'd be denied; a Weedwacker is not a surgical tool.

Scariest part? It made perfect sense to him at the time.
